Twenty-eight years ago I became a caregiver for my husband who was diagnosed with primary, progressive multiple sclerosis, a debilitating chronic disease for which there is no cure at present, and I did not know what to do.
Navigating through the unknown, I made many mistakes not knowing how to navigate my new reality, and that caused additional stress on me and my family. Eventually, the stress and overwhelm became too much and I got really sick.
At work one morning my telephone rang and with the phone to my ear I could not bring out the words to speak and answer the phone. I was terrified. I knew my health was at serious risk, so I went to see my family doctor right away. She immediately put me on sick leave and I was off work for over 6 months to nurture and heal myself.
The good news is, I recovered and successfully accomplished my goals.
