For some MS families life is emotionally draining, for others life is probably normal or as close to normal as can be. Everyone handles this horrendous disease differently.
No one wants to be inflicted with MS of any kind. This disease brings enormous suffering to families that care for loved ones and as we celebrate another year of World MS Day, I wish to bring awareness to the suffering of spouses and children in this MS journey.
MS families are empathetic to the MS suffer and become so involved in taking care of their loved ones often times they neglect their own health. This gallant effort of selflessness negatively impacts the caregiver’s health and the family is no further ahead.
When a family is impacted by chronic or serious illness one of the most important areas of concern should be that of the primary caregiver’s health. Therefore, it is imperative to seek advice from professionals, in the area of care giving. Be reminded that experience is the greatest teacher and people who have walked the walk can talk the talk; they understand. Get informed, ask questions, listen and learn. Most importantly, apply the knowledge learned so as to bring about a healthy balance for the benefit of the entire family.
MS present such complexities that the MS sufferer can be shattered by the diagnosis for fear of the unknown. For this reason alone the caregiver must be in a position to apply the knowledge learned, become engaged, reach out, ask for help so you can take care of yourself.
MS is a major concern for the whole family. I pray that MS will soon be a disease of the past and that everyone will be blessed with the gift of life to live MS free.
In recognition of World MS Day, May 25, 2016 we all hope for a cure. It can’t come too soon
